The Riceville Volunteer Fire Department is responsible for providing primary fire, rescue and ambulance service to the citizens of the Riceville Community. We also have a county wide mutual aid agreement to assist any department that may request our assistance. The Riceville Volunteer Fire Department provides to the citizens of the Riceville Community public fire education, fire suppression, emergency medical services, and protects the community with service coverage 24/7/365 provided by volunteers and career members. The population we serve is approximately 10,000 in size with an area of approximately 14 square miles. Pre-incident surveys and fire suppression encompass numerous mobile home parks, single family dwelling, nursing homes, health care facility, apartment complexes with multiply floors and single floors, housing developments, rural areas, woodland urban interface areas, commercial and residential properties and areas with and without fire hydrant.
The Riceville Volunteer Fire Department currently has been at this location since early 1970's with two additions added to the existing building. We currently have six bays, sleeping quarters for male and female, lounge area, offices, communications room, and small kitchen. The current facility we have is approximately 7100 square feet in size with a back-up emergency generator. The Riceville Volunteer Fire Department has nine pieces of apparatus. Included are one chief?s vehicle, three class A engines, one tanker for water shuttle operations, one brush truck with a compressed air foam system, one support vehicle, one certified ambulance and one support trailer. The Riceville Volunteer Fire Department is a combination department that averages 45 members on its roster. Our staff is comprised of both volunteer and career personnel. We respond annually to an average of 1200 to 1800 calls for service.
The Riceville Volunteer Fire Department participates in a variety of training activities from in house classes to county exercises. These classes consist of non-certification classes to state, national, and international certification programs. Within our department we have a vast range of personnel who hold numerous certifications from basic to the advanced levels of training. The state of North Carolina requires any member of a fire department to maintain 36 hours of training per year. Within these hours Riceville Volunteer Fire Department requires 36 hours of in-house annually. Riceville Volunteer Fire Department conducts regular weekly meetings for the general membership. The Board of Directors at Riceville Volunteer Fire Department holds one scheduled meeting per month. During the course of a year there l special meetings may be called for the membership and/or Board of Directors to address urgent matters that may arise.
All applications are processed once a quarter. All applicants must attend 3 consecutive meetings prior to being accepted. Upon acceptance of application there will be an agility and skills evaluation as pertaining to the position being applied for.
